- “KPop Demon Hunters ” continues to maintain its status as a cultural phenomenon.
The fast-food chain released two meals — a Saja Boys breakfast and a Huntr/x meal — and each comes with a collectors card, which resellers have already taken to Ebay.
For the singing voices behind Huntr/x (EJAE, Audrey Nuna and Rei Ami) and the Saja Boys (Andrew Choi, samUIL Lee, Kevin Woo and Danny Chung), the partnership holds deep cultural significance for them and reflects a milestone for Korean food and flavors.
Speaking with Variety, Woo said the chain gave him a sense of home. Aside from being his comfort food, Woo who grew up in the United States also spent a lot of time traveling. “I lived in Korea and Japan, and McDonald’s was my home.” He added, “It was always consistent wherever I went. It brought back happy memories.”
Chung revealed his go-to order for as long as he can remember has been the Big Mac. “It just represented what McDonald’s is,” he said. However, his love for the Big Mac held a deeper connection to his grandfather. “When we first came to America, my grandfather would usually take care of me. He didn’t know too much about America, but he knew about McDonald’s, so he would take me, and he would order a Big Mac. So we would share that together, and to this day, I still have that fond memory of my grandfather, so that’s why I still get it.”
Lee, who grew up a fan of chicken nuggets, echoed the feelings of childhood nostalgia, and why McDonald’s was more than a fast-food place. “We come from an immigrant home, and when we first got to America, McDonald’s was the place to go to if there was a special occasion.” He added, “I remember going there and using the play place all the time. It was a place where you have fun and you also have food with with your favorite people.”
Ami talked growing up and eating McDonald’s regularly. “I remember the first time I tried an American cheeseburger, it was at a McDonald’s. It was a very affordable option for a family, especially when both of your parents were working long hours and they barely have time to even cook for you. So sometimes it was just like a very nice getaway for everyone to enjoy the food without the stress cooking and cleaning.”
EJAE made Oscars history when “Golden,” which she co-wrote with Mark Sonnenblick and South Korean hit factorythe Black Label(Yu Han Lee, Hee Dong Nam, Zhun), became the first Korean track to win best original song. For her, the collaboration of a global brand and worldwide phenomenon of the film made sense. “McDonald’s is so global, and I feel like ‘KPop Demon Hunters’ is so global, and using Korean culture and having it in the food and sharing that means the world.”
Nuna added, “Sharing that with the world. It’s the highest level of infiltrating culture, and showing a true evolution of culture.”
The Saja Boys breakfast meal includes a Spicy Saja McMuffin, a sausage McMuffin with egg topped with a peppery Spicy Saja Sauce — inspired by the fire of Gwi-Ma — hash browns and a “soda pop” (small soda). The Huntr/x meal includes Ramyeon McShaker Fries: a spicy, umami spin on the classic fries featuring a soy, garlic, sesame and spice seasoning — inspired by Rumi, Mira and Zoey’s go-to snack; Hunter Sauce, a sweet chili sauce mixing notes of chili, garlic and pepper with just enough heat to accompany the 10 chicken McNuggets inspired by the band’s fierce, yet fun-loving personalities; and demon sauce: a bold mustard sauce with heat and tang — made purple, just like demon patterns.
Those flavors represent Korea and Koran culture on a global platform. Says Woo, “To introduce flavors like the spicy flavors and the ramyeon seasoning for the fries and hash brown, and just little elements of our culture being implemented in one of the biggest brands in the world, it’s one of our proudest moments as Korean Americans.”
Added Nuna, “We’re in a world now where there are Korean influenced flavors at McDonald’s. We never could have imagined that it would happen. It is overdue.”
