Craig Berube was quick to throw his goaltender under the bus following Friday’s loss.
The Toronto Maple Leafs head coach blamed Joseph Woll‘s level of play following the 4-3 overtime defeat at the hands of the Carolina Hurricanes.
“He’s played well, but, like, tonight, in the end, I think, I don’t think, I know we need a save,” Berube said. “Whether it’s the OT or one of the breakaways, you know, you just need a big save there.”
Woll stopped 32 of the 36 shots he faced from the Canes, but allowed a goal on a penalty shot from Eric Robinson and a shorthanded breakaway from K’Andre Miller.
The 27-year-old has taken over the Leafs’ net recently, starting five of the last six contests.
Despite only getting one win in those games, he’s had a .914 save percentage and 3.01 goals against average in that span.
“I feel pretty solid, pretty solid in net,” Woll said of his recent play following the loss.
The Leafs have lost 11 of 13 games since the Olympic break and have fallen to 25th in the NHL.
